Description
Ingredients
Scale
- 500 g Weißbrot
- 500 g Schinken oder Salami
- 500 g Käse, Gouda
- ½ Liter Milch
- 2 Eier
- 2 EL Mehl
- Salz
- Pfeffer
- Petersilie
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F) so that it is ready for baking when the casserole is assembled.
- Cut the Weißbrot (white bread) into bite-sized cubes and place them into a large mixing bowl.
- Dice the Schinken (ham) or Salami into small, even cubes, and add them to the bowl with the bread.
- Cut the Gouda cheese into small cubes that are similar in size to the bread and meat. Add the cheese cubes to the mixing bowl.
- Gently toss the bread, ham or salami, and cheese together to ensure an even mixture. Then transfer the mixture into a large, deep, ovenproof baking dish or casserole dish. Spread it out evenly across the dish.
- In a separate bowl, crack the eggs and whisk them together with the milk and flour until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Season the mixture generously with salt and freshly ground pepper to taste.
- Finely chop a handful of fresh parsley and stir it into the egg-milk mixture, making sure it is evenly distributed.
- Pour the seasoned egg-milk mixture evenly over the bread, ham, and cheese mixture in the baking dish. Use a spoon or spatula to gently press down the mixture so that the liquid soaks into all the ingredients.
- Cover the baking dish with its lid or loosely with aluminum foil. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake at 200°C (392°F) for about 45 minutes.
- After 30 minutes of baking, remove the lid or foil to allow the casserole to brown on top. Continue baking uncovered for the remaining 15 minutes, until the top is golden and the casserole is set in the center.
- Remove the baking dish from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. Garnish with additional chopped parsley if desired.
- Slice and serve the Bergbauern-Auflauf hot, ideally with a side of fresh salad.
Notes
Feel free to use a mix of ham and salami for extra flavor, or substitute with your favorite deli meats. For a more rustic touch, use day-old bread. You can also experiment with different types of cheese such as Emmental or Swiss. This dish pairs beautifully with a crisp green salad. For a vegetarian version, omit the meat and add sautéed mushrooms or vegetables.
