- 1 Weißkohl (white cabbage)
- 2 EL Öl (2 tablespoons oil)
- 1/2 Tasse Wasser (1/2 cup water)
- 1 EL Sojasauce (1 tablespoon soy sauce)
Instructions
- Begin by preparing the cabbage. Remove any outer leaves from the Weißkohl (white cabbage) that are wilted or damaged. Cut the cabbage into quarters and remove the hard core from each section. Then, slice the cabbage quarters into fine, thin strips. This will help the cabbage cook evenly and absorb flavors well.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large, deep frying pan or a wide pot over medium heat. Once the oil is hot but not smoking, add the sliced cabbage to the pan. Pour in 1/2 cup of water to provide moisture for braising. Stir the cabbage briefly to coat it in the oil and water.
- Cover the pan with a lid to trap the steam. Allow the cabbage to simmer and braise over medium-low heat for about 30 minutes. Every 5 to 10 minutes, remove the lid and stir the cabbage to prevent it from sticking to the bottom or browning too much. If the pan gets too dry, add a small splash of water as needed.
- After 25 minutes of braising, remove the lid. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of soy sauce over the cabbage. Stir well to distribute the soy sauce evenly, and let the cabbage cook uncovered for the final 5 minutes. This allows the excess liquid to evaporate, and the soy sauce to infuse and slightly caramelize with the cabbage.
- Once the cabbage is tender and the liquid has reduced, taste and adjust seasoning if desired. Serve the braised cabbage hot as a delicious side dish or light main course.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of black pepper, some caraway seeds, or sautéed onions to the cabbage before braising. Serve this dish alongside potatoes, rice, or your favorite protein. The cabbage can be prepared in advance and reheats well, making it a great meal prep option.
