- 200 g Spätzle (German egg noodles)
- 2 Paprikaschoten (bell peppers)
- 2 Zwiebeln (onions)
- 500 g Gyros (seasoned gyros meat, usually pork or chicken)
- 2 Becher Sahne (2 cups or 400 ml cream)
- 1 Becher Schmand (1 cup or 200 g sour cream or crème fraîche)
- 1 Päckchen Zwiebelsuppe (1 packet onion soup mix)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 180°C (356°F), ensuring the oven rack is placed in the middle position.
- Peel the onions and finely chop them into small pieces. Set aside.
- Wash the bell peppers thoroughly. Remove the stems, seeds, and membranes. Cut the peppers into small, even cubes.
- Take a large ovenproof baking dish or casserole dish and spread the uncooked Spätzle evenly on the bottom to create the first layer.
- Evenly distribute the chopped bell peppers and onions over the Spätzle, ensuring the vegetables are spread out for even flavor in every bite.
- Spread the gyros meat evenly over the layer of vegetables. Try to distribute the meat so that every portion will have a good amount of gyros.
- In a separate bowl, combine the cream, Schmand, and the packet of onion soup mix. Whisk together thoroughly until you have a smooth, well-mixed sauce.
- Pour the cream, Schmand, and soup mix sauce evenly over the layered ingredients in the baking dish, making sure that the liquid covers all areas. This will help the Spätzle cook and the flavors meld together.
- Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 40 minutes. The casserole is done when the top is golden and bubbling, and the Spätzle are tender.
- Remove the Gyros-Spätzle Auflauf from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. This helps the casserole set and makes it easier to portion. Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
You can add grated cheese on top before baking for a deliciously cheesy crust. If you cannot find pre-seasoned gyros meat, you can marinate strips of pork or chicken with gyros spices (oregano, garlic, paprika, thyme, and a bit of lemon juice). Serve with a fresh salad for a complete meal. The dish can be prepared in advance and reheated for convenience.
