Description
Ingredients
Scale
- 750 g ground meat (Hackfleisch)
- 2 eggs
- 1 stale bread roll, cubed (altbackenes Brötchen, gewürfelt)
- 1 onion, finely diced
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
- Nutmeg, to taste
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 200 g Tilsiter or mountain cheese, diced
- 1 package puff pastry (Blätterteig)
- 1 egg, for brushing
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground meat, two eggs, cubed stale bread roll, finely diced onion, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg. Mix all ingredients thoroughly using your hands or a sturdy spoon until the mixture is well blended and forms a homogeneous mass. The eggs provide enough moisture, so you do not need to soak the bread roll beforehand.
- Add the diced green and red bell peppers along with the diced Tilsiter or mountain cheese to the meat mixture. Gently fold these in until they are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
- On a clean countertop, roll out the puff pastry sheet according to package instructions until it is large enough to wrap around the meat loaf completely.
- Shape the meat mixture into an even, oval-shaped loaf. Place the loaf in the center of the rolled-out puff pastry.
- Carefully wrap the puff pastry around the meat loaf, sealing the edges well to prevent any filling from leaking during baking. If desired, reserve a small amount of pastry to cut out decorative shapes for the top of the loaf.
- Transfer the wrapped meat loaf onto the prepared baking tray, seam side down. If you made decorative pastry shapes, place them on top of the loaf for a festive touch.
- Beat the remaining egg and brush it evenly over the top and sides of the puff pastry. This will give the finished loaf a beautiful golden shine.
- Place the baking tray in the preheated oven and bake for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the meat is cooked through. If the pastry browns too quickly, you can cover it loosely with aluminum foil for the remainder of the baking time.
- Once baked, remove the Käse–Hackbraten in Blätterteig from the oven and let it rest for about 10 minutes before slicing. This will help the juices redistribute and make slicing easier. Cut into thick slices and serve warm.
Notes
You can use any type of semi-hard cheese if Tilsiter or mountain cheese is not available. The filling can be customized by adding herbs or switching up the vegetables according to your preference. Serve this delicious meatloaf with a fresh salad or roasted vegetables for a complete meal. Leftovers can be enjoyed cold or gently reheated.
