Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large, tender apples
- A splash of lemon juice
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- 250 g flour
- 200 ml milk
- A pinch of salt
- 2 eggs
- 200 ml oil for frying
Instructions
- Prepare the batter: In a large mixing bowl, add the flour and a pinch of salt. Pour in the milk and crack in the eggs. Using a whisk or hand mixer, blend the ingredients together until a smooth, thick batter forms. Make sure there are no lumps remaining. Set the batter aside to rest while you prepare the apples.
- Prepare the apples: Peel the apples thoroughly using a vegetable peeler. Using an apple corer or a small paring knife, carefully remove the core from each apple. Once cored, slice the apples crosswise into rings about 1 cm thick. Try to keep the slices uniform so they cook evenly.
- Prevent browning: Drizzle the apple rings lightly with a splash of lemon juice, ensuring all surfaces are coated. This will help prevent the apples from browning and add a hint of tanginess to the finished rings.
- Heat the oil: Pour the oil into a large, deep frying pan or pot, ensuring there is enough oil to submerge the apple rings. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches about 170-180°C (340-355°F). If you do not have a thermometer, test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter in—it should sizzle and begin to brown after a few seconds.
- Coat the apple rings: Working in batches, dip each apple ring into the prepared batter, making sure it is evenly coated on all sides. Let any excess batter drip off before frying.
- Fry the apple rings: Carefully place the battered apple rings into the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the rings for about 2-3 minutes per side, turning them occasionally with tongs or a slotted spoon, until they are golden brown and crisp on the outside.
- Drain the apple rings: Once the apple rings are golden and cooked through, use a slotted spoon to lift them from the oil. Place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
- Serve: While the apple rings are still hot, generously dust them with powdered sugar. Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
Notes
For the best results, use firm apple varieties such as Braeburn, Jonagold, Royal Gala, Boskop, Golden Delicious, or Granny Smith. The apple rings taste delicious with vanilla sauce, vanilla ice cream, or whipped cream on the side. For an extra treat, you can toss the hot apple rings in cinnamon sugar instead of just powdered sugar. If you prefer, you can substitute the milk in the batter with wine or beer for a different flavor profile.
