Ingredients
Scale
- 500 g Faschiertes (ground meat)
- 500 g Spätzle (German egg noodles)
- 1 Packung passierte Tomaten (1 package of sieved tomatoes)
- 1 Dose Mais (1 can of corn)
- 200 g geriebener Käse (grated cheese)
- 250 ml Schlagobers (heavy cream)
- 2 Prisen Salz und Pfeffer (salt and pepper)
- 1 TL Paprikapulver (paprika powder)
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the Spätzle and cook them according to the package instructions until they are al dente. Once cooked, drain the Spätzle in a colander and rinse briefly with cold water to stop the cooking process. Set aside.
- Meanwhile, heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the Faschiertes (ground meat) to the pan and cook, stirring frequently, until it is browned and cooked through, breaking up any lumps with a spatula.
- Once the meat is browned, pour in the passierte Tomaten (sieved tomatoes). Stir to combine, then season the mixture with salt, pepper, and paprika powder. Let the sauce simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F) while you assemble the casserole.
- In a large ovenproof baking dish, spread half of the cooked Spätzle evenly on the bottom. Spoon half of the meat-tomato mixture over the Spätzle, then sprinkle half of the drained corn on top. Add a layer of half the grated cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining Spätzle, meat sauce, corn, and cheese.
- Pour the Schlagobers (heavy cream) evenly over the entire casserole, ensuring it seeps through the layers for a creamy texture.
- Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown and the casserole is bubbling.
- Remove the Spätzleauflauf from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving. Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
Notes
You can use a combination of ground beef and pork for extra flavor. Feel free to add other vegetables such as bell peppers or peas for variety. For a spicier version, add a pinch of chili powder or use spicy paprika. The casserole can be prepared in advance and baked just before serving. Leftovers reheat well the next day.
