Bauernauflauf mit Schinken überbacken Rezept

  • Author: Sarah

Description

Ingredients

Scale
  • 450 g Käse, Gouda
  • ½ Liter Milch
  • 3 Eier
  • 500 g Weißbrot
  • 450 g Schinken oder Salami
  • 2 EL Mehl
  • Salz und Pfeffer
  • Petersilie

Instructions

  1. Begin by preheating your oven to 210°C (410°F) to ensure it reaches the proper temperature by the time your dish is ready to be baked.
  2. Take the Weißbrot (white bread), Schinken (ham) or Salami, and Gouda cheese. Cut all three ingredients into evenly sized cubes, approximately 1.5 to 2 cm in size. This ensures uniform cooking and a balanced texture in the final dish.
  3. Place the cubed bread, ham or salami, and cheese together in a large, deep oven-safe skillet or baking dish with high sides. This ‚mixture‘ will form the base of your Bauernauflauf (farmer’s casserole).
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the half liter of milk, 3 eggs, and 2 tablespoons of flour. Whisk these ingredients thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps. The flour will help to thicken the custard and bind the casserole together.
  5. Season the egg and milk mixture with salt and freshly ground pepper to your taste. This step is important to bring out the flavors of the other ingredients.
  6. Finely chop a generous handful of fresh parsley, then stir the chopped parsley into the egg and milk mixture. This adds a fresh, herbaceous note to the dish.
  7. Carefully pour the egg, milk, and parsley mixture evenly over the bread, ham, and cheese cubes in the baking dish. The liquid should soak into the bread and combine all the elements.
  8. Place the baking dish into the preheated oven and bake uncovered at 210°C (410°F) for approximately 40 minutes. During baking, the top should turn golden brown and bubbly, while the inside sets into a creamy, savory custard.
  9. After baking, remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to rest for a few minutes before serving. This resting time helps the dish to set further and makes serving easier.
  10. Serve the Bauernauflauf warm, ideally accompanied by a fresh salad to balance the richness of the casserole with crisp, refreshing greens.

Notes

For an extra flavorful twist, consider using smoked ham or a mix of ham and salami. You can also sprinkle some additional grated cheese on top before baking for a more pronounced cheesy crust. Fresh herbs like chives or thyme can complement the parsley. Serve with a crisp green salad or pickled vegetables to add contrast to the hearty casserole.
