Description
Ingredients
Scale
- 50 g Edamer Käse, gerieben
- Salz und Pfeffer
- 2 Scheiben Brot
- 2 große Zwiebeln
- etwas Öl
- 4 Scheiben Salami
- 1 Ei
- 2 EL Sahne
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (top and bottom heat). Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or lightly greasing it to prevent sticking.
- Peel the onions and slice them into thin rings or half rings. Heat a little oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook them gently, stirring often, until they become soft and slightly translucent. This should take about 5-8 minutes. Avoid browning the onions; they should just be softened.
- While the onions are cooking, cut the salami slices into thin strips. Once the onions are softened, add the sliced salami to the pan and cook for another 1-2 minutes, just until the salami is warmed through and some of its flavor is released. Remove the pan from the heat and let the onion and salami mixture cool slightly.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the egg and the cream (Sahne). Whisk well until thoroughly mixed. Add the grated Edam cheese to the mixture and stir to combine.
- Add the cooled onion and salami mixture to the egg, cream, and cheese mixture. Stir everything together until all ingredients are evenly distributed. Season the mixture generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
- Place the slices of bread on the prepared baking sheet. Evenly divide the onion, salami, and cheese mixture over the bread slices, spreading it out to cover the surface completely and pressing down gently to help it adhere.
- Bake the prepared bread slices in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and bubbling, and the cheese is melted. The bread should be crisp around the edges.
- Remove the Zwiebelkuchen-Schnitten from the oven and let them cool for a minute or two. Serve warm, optionally with a glass of Federweißer or your favorite drink.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of caraway seeds to the onion mixture, as is traditional in many Zwiebelkuchen recipes. If you prefer, use ham or bacon instead of salami. These Zwiebelkuchen-Schnitten are perfect as a hearty snack, appetizer, or a light lunch. They pair especially well with fresh Federweißer (young wine) in autumn.
